Technical plastics

‘Technical plastics’ refers to thermoplastics or engineering plastics whose properties go beyond the commodities such as PE, PP, PS, PVC, and PET.

Features and applications

Engineering plastics are a little more expensive than commodities but have enhanced technical performance and are produced in smaller quantities. They are used for smaller products, such as the mechanical components found under the bonnet of a car, as well as for housings and visible parts. In a nutshell, these plastics are used for technical products with specifications.

Customizable properties of technical plastics

Chiefly thanks to their favourable weight/strength ratio and customizable properties, this group of materials is increasingly used as a replacement for other materials – primarily metal replacements or combined with metal (overmoulding of metal, metal with plastic combinations, with or without reel-to-reel moulding).

Technical plastics at VDL GL Plastics

VDL GL Plastics injection molds the following technical plastics

  • PA: Nylon, polyamide
  • ABS, SAN, and ASA
  • PBT (thermoplastic polyester)
  • PC (polycarbonate)
  • PMMA
  • POM
  • PPO
  • PSU
  • LCP

Blends

In addition to technical plastics, blending – or the mixing of different plastics – opens up many additional possibilities. Blending plastics helps to improve properties, such as heat resistance or colourfastness. VDL GL Plastics has ample experience with the processing of fibre glass-reinforced plastics.
